Toronto Youth Development launches 16th annual summer camps for boys and girls. There’s still plenty of time to register at the schools. The boy’s camp is located at Lord Dufferin Public School. The girls’ camp is located at St. Paul’s Catholic School.

Each year in June, TYD presents the upcoming ASE 7-week camps directly to over 1000 children in various schools in the community. Here students can learn about the camps and ask questions. To showcase the camps, the TYD staff prepares a multimedia presentation where the kids can see themselves or just enjoy. Toronto Youth Development has incorporated research-proven learning strategies recommended by the Ontario Ministry of Education in executing their academic curriculum. The implementation of the new curriculum allocates three hours each day combining Math and Language Arts. The aim is for students to strengthen the skills and lessons they have learned in the previous year, while also preparing them for the following grade, giving students a chance to be ahead of their peers in September.
The curriculum this year is designed for valuable learning to take place even in a camp setting, without making students feel like they are in school. The lessons are framed in inquiry-based tasks and real-life situations that develop students’ critical thinking, creativity and collaborative skills. By embedding lessons into relevant situations, students are constantly—although perhaps unconsciously—tapping into and practicing a wide range of skills while being engaged in the problem solving process. While Parliament was suspended early in the year, the Liberal Party of Canada held a number of “public hearings”, including a forum on Crime Prevention & National Security. Over 200 people gathered to listen and ask questions from a panel of experts. TYD’s Executive Director, Brian Keaney was one of the invited panelists, sharing his expertise on combating youth crime. Each panelist gave a statement which was followed by questions from the forum. A number of Liberal MP’s were part of the forum including Justin Trudeau, Senator Art Eggleton and Stéphane Dion, former Liberal Leader.

Monday, December 21, 2009 – Toronto Youth Development Opens the TSX Market
David Keaney, Chairman, Brian Keaney, Executive Director and the children of Toronto Youth Development, joined Peter Conroy, CEO, Shorcan Brokers Limited, a TMX group of companies to open the market to celebrate the 10th annual Shorcan Charity Day. Each January, for one day, the brokers donate their fees and commissions to TYD to assist our children’s charity.
